Wire Mug Sculpture by Adam Shiverdecker
This one-of-a-kind mug by Bay Area ceramic artist Adam Shiverdecker is a collision of two separate ideas: one references the fragility of common household objects while the other is a nod to more colorful, hyper-crafted objects and high fashion.
Adam Shiverdecker’s work imagines a world where objects from history, the military, and everyday home life have been pushed into the ocean and allowed to decay. By reforming these objects out of wire, he references both children’s war games and modeling, as well as everyday forms of modern construction. Once his wire bases are assembled, he then coats them in irregular amounts of clay, allowing for an arbitrary amount of imagined decay.
“It is this fantasy of decay – of a culture that could regard weapons of war as follies, as disintegrating monuments to an earlier era – which my work tries to trigger.” - Adam Shiverdecker
This concept is further extended to historical forms, particularly Greek ceramics as a representation of a culture that venerated war and conflict, and into mugs, representative of modern American life and the “absurd times” we live in.
